{"id":1052,"date":"2018-06-09T10:04:58","date_gmt":"2018-06-09T14:04:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/energyrealist.com\/?p=1052"},"modified":"2021-01-30T16:06:40","modified_gmt":"2021-01-30T21:06:40","slug":"1052","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/?p=1052","title":{"rendered":"Cement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>House Retrofit vs. Cement \u2013 I don\u2019t know why that comparison came into my head.&nbsp; I guess I was just wondering about the scale of what\u2019s facing us.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1057\" src=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-07-at-8.21.15-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-07-at-8.21.15-AM.png 529w, https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-07-at-8.21.15-AM-300x213.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The graph shows energy savings through retrofits, or home energy performance improvements (the left bar), compared to the energy consumed in making cement.&nbsp; The center shows the cement used in China\u2019s 3 Gorges dam and the right the yearly average (over 100 years) of US cement making.<\/p>\n<p>The point is; we are making a difference, but it\u2019s very small compared to the big energy users.&nbsp; We need to face the big problems and do some big things, as well as going from house to house.<\/p>\n<p>Some detail;<\/p>\n<p>The retrofit number is based on some optimistic estimates, 10,000 retrofits in NJ per year, times 50, assuming every state does the same (a big stretch), assuming a 25% improvement (also a stretch).<\/p>\n<p>Part of why this is a stretch is outlined in this article by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/consumption\/residential\/reports\/2009\/square-footage.php\">US Energy Information Administration<\/a>.&nbsp;Houses are getting bigger and purely based on size are using more energy.<\/p>\n<p>The 3 Gorges dam number is based on 16 million tonnes of cement used in the construction.&nbsp; To put this in context China uses about 130 TIMES that much cement per year.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/niallmccarthy\/2014\/12\/05\/china-used-more-concrete-in-3-years-than-the-u-s-used-in-the-entire-20th-century-infographic\/#33ba1a684131\"> See this Forbes article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The US figure is more squishy, it comes from the same Forbes article, where China\u2019s use over 3 years is shown as larger than the US use over 100 years.&nbsp; It\u2019s a staggering comparison.
