(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/full-text-of-president-obamas-oil-spill-speech-2010-06-15\">One of the many sites giving the full text is here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>A day or so later a number of news outlets published an article regarding the situation in Nigeria (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2010\/may\/30\/oil-spills-nigeria-niger-delta-shel\">here is the Guardian, UK version published before (!) the speech<\/a>).\u00a0 There oil, by the millions of gallons, has spilt into the environment for over 40 years.\u00a0 We can all argue who is at fault; the companies or the locals who sabotage and tap the pipelines, or both.\u00a0 Bottom line, the stuff is spilling, polluting and being wasted.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_561\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/pelican.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-561\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-561\" title=\"pelican\" src=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/pelican-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/pelican-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/pelican.jpg 614w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-561\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">still flying...<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This would seem to be the perfect time to make a bold announcement regarding renewable energy resources.\u00a0 But no, I guess we\u2019ll mosey along as usual.<\/p>\n<p>And of course there is natural gas aplenty!\u00a0 All it takes is hydraulic fracturing \u2013 \u201cfracking\u201d \u2013 with the \u201cusual\u201d expected environmental results.\u00a0 I have not seen the film \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gaslandthemovie.com\/\">Gasland<\/a>\u201d that has made the rounds of the talk shows (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=127932770\">as here<\/a>) , but some of the scenes sound like a lot of fun \u2013 like being able to light your tap water on fire.<\/p>\n<p>With all that as backdrop here\u2019s a view from one of the \u201csmall people\u201d. (<a href=\"http:\/\/schott.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/06\/18\/small-people\/\">No matter what the intent of BP\u2019s chairman, the phrase will live on<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I finally completed my BPI energy auditor certification.\u00a0 Got the card to prove it &#8211; even if it has some other guys picture on it.\u00a0 But what the h\u2026, they\u2019ve promised to send me a replacement card with my own boyishly handsome, yet rugged and experienced, visage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/BPI-card-1006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-565\" title=\"BPI card 1006\" src=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/BPI-card-1006-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/BPI-card-1006-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/BPI-card-1006-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/BPI-card-1006.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Of course there are no energy audit jobs to be had in the state of NJ.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 The state halted its support of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njcleanenergy.com\/residential\/home\/home\">program<\/a>,\u00a0 having run out of funds.\u00a0 To quote: \u201cThe program&#8217;s budget is being reviewed to support applications received prior to the posting of this notice\u2026..\u00a0 Contractors submitting applications after the posting of this notice (May 7, 2010), will be notified that the application cannot be accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The budget was to be reviewed yesterday (June 18), and I will update the site when a decision becomes known.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I wish the state would EITHER cancel the program outright and let the customer decide if $300 or so is worth getting a detailed energy audit and recommendations on their house.\u00a0 OR, make sure the program, which reduces the cost to the owner to $125 out of pocket, is guaranteed for at least a year at a time.\u00a0 This limbo situation is the worst possible, because all audits are on hold.\u00a0 Nobody will spend $300 this week, if next week the same thing will be less than half the cost.\u00a0 And when it does restart there is no guarantee it will not stop in another couple of months from now.\u00a0 What incentive do I have to invest in some $6000 on equipment under this scenario?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Small projects on the sustainable energy front are also slow.\u00a0 I know these are just anecdotal stories, but they do seem to indicate the malaise in this sector.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A friend of mine was set to build a ground mounted PV system for a client in western NJ.\u00a0 But the neighbors and the town simply made things too difficult. After some months, and expense of course, the client got building permission providing he planted trees along the whole road frontage to shield the installation from the sensitive eyes of travelers along the road.\u00a0 Decision: Too expensive. Likely shadows from the trees once they grew.\u00a0 Cancel the installation.<\/li>\n<li>Another local solar installer had three installations in the last six months.\u00a0 That\u2019s simply not enough to support a two man business.\u00a0 With years of electrician and building experience, plus weeks of PV installation training in California behind them these guys now do handyman jobs to get some cash in the door.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People (small or not) are trying to do the right thing \u2013 conserving, recycling, upgrading systems and retraining on their own dime(!) \u2013 to get on a path to sustainability.\u00a0 The president says the right words.\u00a0 Somewhere between the two both the message and the money gets lost.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>On a tangential subject:\u00a0 a short article in the <a href=\"httphttp:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/freeexchange\/2010\/06\/taxing_carbon:\/\/\">Economist, dated June 19, 2010<\/a>, once again endorses the idea of a carbon tax.\u00a0 The idea is supported by a study showing that contrary to popular opinion the economy of the UK would improve with a carbon tax \u2013 and the parallel abolition of related tax breaks, incentives, mandatory purchase schemes etc. etc.\u00a0 The study is specific to the UK, and may not apply to the US.\u00a0 But we should at least have the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, no country in the world, even the ones we think of as most progressive in the energy field, like Germany and Scandinavian countries, has a comprehensive <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carbon_tax\">carbon tax<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/gulf-mex-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-562\" title=\"gulf mex 3\" src=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/gulf-mex-3-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/gulf-mex-3-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/gulf-mex-3.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong> But you know, there is no reason why the US can\u2019t lead the world in this thing.\u00a0 Is there?\u00a0 Really?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The small people doing sustainable energy are not doing so well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-560","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/560","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=560"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/560\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":564,"href":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/560\/revisions\/564"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=560"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=560"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/energyrealist.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=560"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
